Grape Data Tool, Now with CAGR and Percentile Calculators

Those of you who use my Grape Data Tool know how it allows you to bring up data on the wine grape industry in the blink of an eye. It saves me tons of time. But I still had to calculate percentile prices manually in Excel. If I wanted to know the 80th percentile prices for, say, Sonoma County Pinot Noir, I had to open up Table 8, find the data and calculate the price myself.

This summer, my intern, Jacob Tehrani, put an end to this time sink. With a combination of creative spreadsheeting, a handful of homemade macros for data arrangement and a macrobin full of elbow grease and perseverance, he added a percentile calculator into the Grape Data Tool. This came after we had already put in a CAGR calculator that allows better estimates of growth than simple averages.

You should download the tool and make use of it. You can find it and the previous "Lite" version at my Excel tools page. The lite version doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but it's much smaller. The "Full" version, like one of those souped-up Swiss Army knives is a bit unwieldy. Saving your last inputs takes a bit of time. Anyways, let me know how you use the tool, let me know if you like it and, most of all, let me know if something doesn't work.
