El Dorado and Sierra Foothills Presentation
I know it's been a long time since I posted, but for those interested, I'm doing an online presentation to the Sierra Foothills growers' associations. See the press release below: PLACERVILLE, CA: The El Dorado Wine Grape Growers Association is pleased to announce the rescheduled return of Gabriel Froymovich of Vineyard Financial Associates as the guest speaker at the next grape grower meeting to be held via Zoom on May 27, at 6:00pm. There is no charge to attend but pre-reg

El Dorado Wine Grape Price Forecast
Yesterday, I presented to the El Dorado Wine Grape Growers Association. I spoke about where we are in the wine market cycle. I also reviewed my forecast from last year and updated it for next year. Last year, I shared with the El Dorado growers that I predicted a 2018 Wine Grape Survey weighted average price for all varieties of $1,673. The actual price was $1,672. That's an error of $1 or 0.06%. My second best forecast ever and my best public forecast ever (though my W
El Dorado Probably has Labor Issues, Too
Well, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is at least a little bit less true than you originally thought. After asking for feedback in my last blog post, I got some. I was wondering why government data showed that, corrected for inflation, labor rates in El Dorado looked to be steady - or maybe even falling - while total grape sales rose. I also pondered the meaning of fewer reported businesses employing vineyard workers. The mystery is not completely solved, bu

Is El Dorado the Secret Land of Non-Existent Vineyard Labor Issues?
On March 20th, I’ll be speaking to the El Dorado Wine Grape Growers’ Association. They’re a great group – they always have a lot of great questions and they're great at sharing their knowledge with each other and me. They also put me up in the Cary House, a nice, old-timey hotel in downtown Placerville, which might be the most underrated town in California. And it's a real place, unlike El Dorado's mythical namesake. Map to a very different El Dorado: My presentation is go

Recommended Prices for El Dorado Wine Grapes - 2017
I was recently asked by the El Dorado Wine Grape Growers Association to produce recommended prices. Not exactly forecasts, more of an assessment of fair prices, based on long-term trends and cost inflation. Below is a basic chart, an excerpt from the report. I would recommend that you read the report, which is linked to below, after the chart and the EDWGGA's press release. I also included download links to the original calculations and a chart, produced from my Grape Dat

Price Forecast for El Dorado Wine Grapes for 2017 Harvest
Recently, I've had the chance to focus a bit on the El Dorado AVA. I did work for a client there and also put together a presentation for the El Dorado Wine Growers Association. Click here to get the report I put together for the growers. In the process, I noticed that the reported El Dorado grape prices look pretty easy to forecast. In fact, the report and presentation included a regression that could be used to forecast prices for 2016 (the El Dorado Wine Grape Survey ha
The Economics of Growing Wine in El Dorado
Last month, I presented to the El Dorado Winegrowers’ association. The topic of the presentation was the economics and pricing dynamics of the market for El Dorado wine grapes. Just last year, the UC Davis Extension service put out one of their characteristically detailed and accurate cost studies for the Sierra Nevada Foothills, which illuminated the challenge of planting and operating a profitable vineyard in the region. I enjoyed giving the presentation for three reasons
